SCAPULAR SERIES
2013-2016
The Scapular Series, are sculptures grounded in the poetics of materiality and dialogue on the ecology of the internal and external. Scapulars are worn over the shoulders (scapula) for protection and as a symbol of devotion within the Catholic faith; iconic images are embedded in the pendants that rest on the chest and back. Remixing the scapular, traditional iconography is replaced with a range of natural and man-made materials encouraging contemplation and dialogue on the roles of protection and devotion in relation to self, community, and our planet.

Consumer Protection
Altered receipts reveal the sacred and profane words within consumer culture. The receipts, cut and sewn, form 40 scapulars attached with metal pins onto painted canvas. The transformed receipts resonate with new meanings and new meditations on the actions of our daily lives. When read as a whole, this piece invites the reader to participate in the co-creation of a non-linear poetic text.
We Mirror Each Other
In the remixing of this scapular sculpture, traditional iconography is replaced with mirrors attached to stitched canvas. When viewers stand looking at this work alongside others, they see parts of each other reflected back, showing each as the icons of protection and devotion.
Every Bade of Grass
In the remixing of this scapular sculpture, traditional iconography is replaced with blades of grass relationally arranged under microscope glass. The title references a quote from the Talmud, “Every blade of grass has its angel that bends over it and whispers, ‘Grow, grow."
Transforming Fire
In the remixing of this scapular sculpture, traditional iconography is replaced by marks made from burning paper with matches.
